Why Tradies Choose Festool
The short answer is dust extraction. Almost every Festool tool has an extraction port designed in from the start, and it fits the same hose on the same extractor. The extractor switches on when the tool does. If you work in occupied houses, or you cut engineered stone, MDF or anything covered by silica rules, that changes how you work more than any spec on the tool itself.
The second answer is the guide rail. The track saw and the rail turn a portable saw into something closer to a panel saw, with a splinter-free cut line you can place by eye on the mark. The same rails run the router and the jigsaw. That is the system argument in practice: buy one tool and you own part of the setup for the next one.
Festool goes back to 1925, when Albert Fezer and Gottlieb Stoll started the company in Esslingen, Germany. It became Festo, and the power tool side was split off as Festool in 2000. It is still owned by the Stoll family, now under TTS Tooltechnic Systems, which also owns SawStop and Shaper. Roughly 80 percent of Festool tools are still made in Germany.
The case against is cost. Festool runs two to three times the price of good mainstream brands, and the consumables keep costing you. Abrasives, Domino tenons, rails and hoses are all Festool parts at Festool prices. The system also only pays back if you buy into it. One Festool sander sitting next to another brand’s vacuum gives up most of what you paid for. If you are buying a single tool and nothing else, the maths is much harder to justify.
The standard warranty runs three years, which is longer than most. Reconditioned tools carry one year. Registration requirements and terms vary by country, so check the conditions that apply where you bought the tool rather than going off a number on a listing.
